(Salzburg 1756 - 1791 Vienna)
Vesperae de Confessore, composed in 1780, is one of only two complete settings, by Mozart, of the vesper psalms probably for Salzburg Cathedral. Mozart had gone to Paris with his mother, who died there in the summer of 1778. His father summoned him home, and reticently he returned, via Strasbourg, Mannheim and Munich, arriving back in Salzburg in January of 1779. He immediately petitioned the archbishop and was appointed Court Organist, whose duties were to play in the cathedral and at court, composing as required. |
