This book (a primary source-reading) is a complete re-setting of the 1841 original Italian, comprising a biography of Mayr (with an account of his trip back to Bavaria in 1838), Mayr's catalogue of works to 1827, poetic eulogies to the composer by eminent Bergamasks and friends, and a list of the original subscribers.
An English translation is printed alongside the original Italian of the biography and catalogue.
A second version, with a German translation alongside the original text is also available.
The actual 'componimenti', the eulogies, which were important to friends and admires at the time and which form a substantial part of the book, have not been translated. The cost of the publications would be out of proportion with the content of the eulogies, particularly when it is borne in mind that the factual information within them does not add to current general knowledge. The originals are, of course, character appraisals for the scholar. |
