Johann Simon Mayr - Biography
(Mendorf 1763 - 1845 Bergamo)

Mayr was born in Mendorf in Bavaria, and studied at the Seminary and then the University in Ingolstadt. From there a patron took him to continue his studies in Italy, including Bergamo and Venice. During his life he wrote over seventy operas, a wealth of liturgical and sacred music, as well as cantatas of every size and combination of forces. He was famous throughout Italy in the first half of the 19th century. He was appointed master of the music at the Basilica Maria Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo; alongside this position he founded a charitable music school.

His works have crept from the once dusty shelves of the Biblioteca Civica, Bergamo - where the vast majority of his works are held - to be edited and now, increasingly, recorded.
