George Frideric Handel - Programme Note
(Halle 1685 - 1759 London)

Handel composed four coronation anthems - for the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, in Westminster Abbey on 11th October 1727. This music was new in its scale and style and re-established Handel's position as the prime composer of ceremonial church music. The choral entry in 'Zadok the Priest' is a truly dramatic and emotional experience, even so, it was sung during the Anointing, in the coronation service, whilst 'My Heart is Inditing' was sung during the Queen's coronation.

Any antagonism towards Handel's appointment to compose for this occasion, over British-born composers, was settled by the fact that he had become a British subject by Act of Parliament earlier in the year.
