(Bergamo 1797 - 1848 Bergamo)
Donizetti was a founder-pupil at Mayr's charitable music school in Bergamo, northern Italy. He was sent to the Bologne Academy to study, returning to his home city and to Mayr for 'post graduate' studies. He wrote many sacred works, songs, some instrumental items and, of course, over sixty operas. Throughout his career, Mayr remained his mentor. The French Chevalier de Légion d'Honneur was conferred upon him.
Towards the end of his life he was appointed court composer in Vienna. Although his health had begun to fail, he continued an amazing schedule of travelling between Naples, Bologne, Bergamo, Vienna and Paris. However, finally incapacitated, he was driven back to Bergamo to die. |
